Possible unknown misspress? I have a really strange version, it's on track, matrices seem to confirm a 1968 press, white text and hendrix to right on sleeve, BUT it's not autocoupled and the side numbers/ track lists are very strange- ie what lp 1 plays side 1 and 2 but is labelled part 2 side 3 and 4,, side 3 is labelled as part one side two but with side fours track list, and side four is labelled part 2 side 2 and with side threes track list. It also looks like other labels have been attached over these as some point.see scans in link provided. I can provide detailed matrices if needed but all correspond to the first issues. The concert is not really all that great. The demos are pretty interesting and insightful and a nice addition.
The album itself is excellent but you have to consider that the masters were not so wonderful to begin with. I have listened to this album since it was new on vinyl, cassette and CD.
I have a 1973 UK pressing to compare this with. This new version is a major improvement over my 1973, but all the glitches are still there, its just sonically cleaner with a better EQ. Gone is most of the fuzzy / scratchy sounding distortion. It is much more enjoyable to listen to. Voodoo Chile on Side A is worth the price of admission.
It sounds better than ever and really cooks. I got two sets originally and am returning one because Side A is pressed way off center and the disc with Sides E and F was warped because it was jammed into the gatefold. The one I'm keeping also has Side A off center but not as bad. Everything else is good and flat. Couple of big clicks on the concert but I don't really care because its unlikely I'll ever really listen to it again.
The vinyl is also really greasy from heavy mold release agent, but that will cleanup. Haven't got to the Blu-ray yet. I'll update about that later and on the rest once it goes through the VPI. Is it worth $100?
Maybe, but I saw it on Amazon for around $61 + tax a few days ago. Lot's of complaints about pressing flaws, but there also some good copies out there, too.
